ChinaMed Glycemic Support Formula 78c
This is an empirical formula that has been developed in order to assist in the management of type II diabetes. Of the various presentations possible for this disease, the common factors are Heat, Dryness due to depletion of the Body Fluids and deficiency of the Qi and Yin. Depending on the underlying causes and the stage of progression of the disease, the pathology may be focussed in one or more of the Lung, Stomach, Spleen or Kidney.
This is a balanced formula that focuses equally on the Spleen-Stomach, Lung and Kidney. Thus, it is a general formula that may be used in cases where the symptoms have been masked by biomedical treatment.
This formula also has a Blood activating, stasis dispelling action because damage to the blood vessels commonly occurs in diabetic patients – the incidence increasing the longer the patient has had the disease. Indeed, cardiovascular disease is the major cause of death in diabetics. In addition, peripheral vascular disease may lead to ischaemia and gangrene of the lower limbs, requiring one or more amputations. For these reasons, this formula contains a group of herbs that specifically targets this pathology. Thus, over the long term this formula may assist in preventing and to some extent reversing arterial damage.
The assessment of patients with diabetes is difficult in the modern clinical setting as most patients presenting with this disease will already be taking medications, and will not show the classic signs of emaciation, excessive hunger, thirst and polyuria. On the contrary, many are rather corpulent (over 80% are obese). Overweight patients tend to have retained Phlegm-Damp, which should also be addressed in the treatment strategy.
